Starting a new stage in life can open you up to all sorts of new experiences. Unfortunately, it can also set the stage for new temptations. Avoiding temptations is a challenge for anyone, not least students who choose to embrace the typical university lifestyle.
As Christians, we don’t have to let temptations overwhelm us. The Bible was given to us as a source of strength and comfort, as well as a guidebook to life. The words contained within it have provided inspiration, encouragement and affirmation throughout the centuries, even millennia, for Jesus’ disciples. In the 21st Century, this is still as true for you and me as it was for the Early Church.
Unfortunately the Bible is a big book – collection of books technically – and finding the words we need for that moment of temptation can be difficult. The Bible’s division into books, chapters and verses is great for finding what you need quickly… so long as you have the chapter and verse reference at hand. If you haven’t got that handy reference, finding the right words can feel impossible. When you’re avoiding temptation, a hard-to-find section of the Bible is the last thing you want.
So, to help myself as much as you guys, I have found 3 verses that help with avoiding temptation. My hope and prayer is that they give you strength and comfort when they are most needed.
1 Corinthians 10v13
No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and He will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation He will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.
This verse is absolutely amazing. Really I need to put some effort in to memorising it (side note: memorising bible verses is a brilliant discipline and I totally recommend it) so that when I am faced with temptation, it can be at the front of my mind. The verse is very straightforward, stating that God will always show you a way out of temptation. That is incredible! God cares about you so much that He will always show you a way to avoid temptation!
I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.
Just as an excuse to polish my halo, this is one of the few verses I do know by heart. I mean, it’s one line so if you can learn one quote from your favourite film then you can learn this verse! If you have read Christ vs Mental Health || My Testimony, you’ll see I rewrote the passage to support those who are struggling. However, this verse is so so so good at multitasking because it applies to every situation. When you are faced with that one temptation you don’t know how to avoid, be assured you can avoid it by asking for Christ’s strength.
Know therefore that the Lord your God is God, the faithful God who keeps covenant and steadfast love with those who love Him and keep His commandments, to a thousand generations…
First of all, I am not saying that being a Christian is about following a rulebook. As someone who hates to follow rules, I could not follow Christianity if it was all about rules. Yes, the 10 Commandments do exist as a guide for us to live by. However, throughout the Old Testament, we see how God’s love never waivers even when those He loves stop following His commandments. This verse is a reminder of that constant faithfulness and love. When faced with such steadfast love, the idea of hurting God by giving into temptation is unimaginable. Avoiding temptation becomes easier when you see it as a way to thank God for the covenant He has kept with us, through Jesus.
My challenge to you is to memorise one of these verses. Learn it so well that no matter the situation or temptation you are facing, you can go to God’s Word straight away.
Once you have picked your memory verse, share it in the comments. Let’s support each other in this as we rely more on God each day.
