This summer has been a little of a roller coaster for me, from being banned from computers through to a confusing ‘not-quite-there-relationship’. Though not working at all in July and two weeks at the Keswick Convention was wonderful, I did miss keeping you guys up to date on all things CounterCultural.CounterCouture. So to make up to you and to celebrate being allowed back on computers, I thought I’d share five things that make me happy.
No matter how much we might hide them away, cuddly toys are something that will make most girls smile. But it doesn’t mean any new teddy bear. No, for this girl there are two specific cuddlies that are close to my heart and will always give me the warm and fuzzies. My two favourites, Ted and G2, have been with me since I was a small child and even now sit in my room for those nights when I’m solo watching a soppy romance. I might be 23 years old but there is still room in my heart for my favourite cuddly toys.
A good meal shared with people I love
You all know how much I LOVE to cook and generally spend time in the kitchen. But while I love to hog the kitchen all to myself, the pleasure of eating a meal is only increased when good company is added into the mix. Whether it is a cosy family meal or cooking up lunch for my besties, sharing food with the people close to me always makes me smile.
The perfect song for that moment
Okay, so I’m not one for creating massively long playlists to inspire me. (I had one friend who always created a brand new playlist for every single essay she wrote…) But I love it when you can find the perfect song for that moment in time. Sometimes its easy- anyone else been helped through lovelife traumas by Taylor Swift or Kelly Clarkson- and sometimes finding the perfect song is the most elusive thing in the world. So when I do find it, it makes the moment. You know what I mean?
Thick, wooly, baggy jumpers
You know the jumpers I mean. Preferably male but most definitely a size or two too big, wooly jumpers are my go to for lazy days from September through to March. The type that make you feel tiny as they consume you while watching reruns of Christmas films. Now don’t you feel like smiling just at the memory of that thick, wooly, baggy jumper. See, it’s happiness in clothing form.
High heels that fit my feet and look elegant
Anyone else know this feeling? When you try on 10 different pairs of heels, or any shoes, and none of them fit, it can be soul-destroying. Throw in being a size 8 with narrow heels and that pile of shoes that don’t fit grows. So when I find a pair of elegant heels that actually stay on my feet, a mini party happens… at least in my head. From cobalt blue wedges through to tan 70s heels, there have been several pairs that have made me this happy. And I bet I’m not the only person!
So those are a few of the things that put a smile on my face. Nothing especially exciting but I guess that goes to show how much happiness can be found in everyday life. If you’ve been riding your own roller coaster recently, why don’t you come up with your own list of things that make you happy. Even better, why don’t you share them in the comments below. It’s time we started celebrating the little things in life!
